The Spad, the E-1 and the S-2 were the last carrier-based reciprocating-engined aircraft. To say that the Navy was glad to get gasoline-fueled aircraft off its carriers is a severe understatement.

While your comment is true (115-145 WAS a huge fire hazard), every pilot that flew them loved them. My old CO started out in Spads and said the only problem he ever had was the piss tube freezing once...LOL
Don't forget the H-34, which was in the Gator Navy until 1973, using the same Wright R-1820 as the S-2 and E-1.
