Today, May 30th, is the traditional day for Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, for the flags that were put on the graves of deceased veterans. It was meant to be a day of mournful reflection, with, at most, parades to commemorate the fallen.
Hundreds of thousands of Americans have died and continue to die in defense of this country and its interests. Many die years and decades afterwards from illnesses and wounds suffered in combat and even afterwards.
Why can't we have a day to remember them without it turning into a festival of commerce?
