There was a Polish joke recounted years back in the NYTimes Sunday Magazine.
A Pole is in the middle of a Polish plain; he has one bullet left and the bayonet affixed. From the West comes a German (Prussian actually), from the East, a Russian. Which does he shoot, which does he close with the bayonet? A: He shoots the Russian, business before pleasure.
