Chimpy's Last Standing Butt-Monkey is Gone

Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada was kicked out of office in a stunning defeat. His party lost 65 seats in Parliament (out of 338 total).

In the US, that would be like losing 84 seats in the House and 19 seats in the Senate.

John Oliver saw it coming.

It is a massive defeat, but because of Canada's first-past-the-post electoral system, it does not signal a huge defeat for the right wing itself. About the same number of people voted Conservative as in the last election, and they were largely the same people (older white men, suburban hockey dudes and socially conservative recent immigrants).

Two things do change though: in Canada, a prime minister with a majority government is essentially an elected dictator, so the new PM has a great opportunity for change and people are looking for that - but whether they will actually get it with this guy where it counts is debatable. Second, the Conservative party has lost its leader and the knives will come out as they try to pick a new one, so we may get as much fragmentation on the Right as on the Left.

But it's looking like a new day in Canada.

I read that back in 1972 when he was 4 months old, it was predicted that Justin Trudeau would be Prime Minister by a visiting Richard Nixon...

Yeah great, I'm going to get four years of deficit spending, increased taxes and stricter gun controls because something has to be done about the bike gangs and posses (Jamaican gangs) shooting their rivals in Toronto.
