So effective immediately, we are reversing our decision to lower the ABV of Maker’s Mark, and resuming production at 45% alcohol by volume (90 proof).
I don't know if any of the 84 proof crap made it to the shelves, but it'll probably be a "New Coke" grade collectable if any did.

Had they just gone ahead and done it without telling anybody, would the world have noticed?
I think so and the blowback would have been an order of magnitude greater.
Apparently it did, and THAT caused the blowback...
I gather that they didn't try to sneak it onto the shelves, they announced the change. The local Wally-Woild liquor shelves had the 90-proof stuff.
