It used to be that raising the debt limit was something that was done with a clean bill. Raising the debt limit has been done, repeatedly, by both Republican and Democratic presidents, Republican and Democratic congresses. All of the current GOP congressional leaders have repeatedly in the past voted to raise the debt limit.
Raising the debt limit was not something that one party needed to do. But that is how the Republicans are now treating it. With that mindset, they have taken what was a two-day exercise in passing a ministerial bill into an exercise that is in the process of wrecking our national credit rating and our economy.
We have unemployment in this country that is stubbornly over 9%. Consumer demand has crashed and is dragging down any prospects of bootstrapping the economy. And thanks to the ideological fools, nothing is going to improve anytime soon. Because rather than do anything to get the economy going, the Republicans have tied Washington in knots for two months over this bullshit.
Worse, the Republicans are using a threat to destroy the economy, to drive the nation into a depression, as a lever to achieve their partisan agenda, one that serves hardly anyone (other than big business and the rich). It is nothing short of fiscal terrorism.
I don't much care for the Democrats. I was once a registered Republican. I've donated to Republican campaigns. But Hell will freeze over before I ever again vote for a Republican for federal office.
And what is it with everyone paying attention to the ratings companies? They're the ones who glossed over the shitty mortgage CDOs and helped drive the crash of the economy in the first place. Most of their executives should be in jail, now, if there was any thirst for justice in this country.

If there's anything the slugs have proven good at, it's escaping justice for what they do in their lust for personal power. If they manage to destroy the world's economy in the next few days, and earn the wrath of even their brainwashed and brain-damaged base, they'll just rename themselves and continue on as usual, blaming all the troubles on the Democrats, for letting the Republicans do it to us.
Without intending to be argumentative I'd observe there doesn't appear to be much difference in the two parties below the epidermis.
The outward differences they display boil down to tactics and strategies for accomplishing similar goals, seems to me.
For that matter, the only difference I can see between this prez and the last several before him is physical appearance and ethnicity.
But there are probably differences I'm not wise enough to see.

There are many differences that you are not seeing, if that is from your wisdom or lack of I can't say.
Some things have not changed from Bush, but many have changed in very meaningful and fruitful ways. Some of them may not be important to you but they have changed. ACA for one. This is a huge change for the better. It does not go far enough IMO but it is a huge change. DADT. Gone. FEMA. Now run by much more competent management. Iraq. We are not completely out and may never be but we have ceased fighting and drawn down hugely.
All of this change is from Democrats, sometimes with the votes of a very, very few Republicans.
Is that enough? If it is not, take a good look back over the last 20 years and tell me that we haven't changed or that the 2 parties are the same. You can't do that with straight face.
The two parties are not the same. Read this. Longish, but important: http://pleasecutthecrap.typepad.com/main/2011/05/rightwingeconomy.html

I too, a life long registered Republican, VOW to never, ever ! Vote for a GOP candidate again.
Not even for effing dog catcher...
