In Case You Give a Frak

The list of the Oscar nominees.

I stopped paying attention to this crap when The English Patient won best picture. That movie was flacked about as "Casablanca for the 1990s."

Yeah, it was just like Casablanca, or it would have been if they had made everyone in Casablanca into despicable characters and added another hour to the movie. If Casablanca had been anything at all like the English Patient, audiences would have been rooting for Major Strasser to kill them all.

I don't pay any attention to the Oscars, most likely because I don't get out to the movies much. And, frankly, it seems to me that, like The English Patient, the movies that get the nod, seem to be tests of endurance and pretension more than entertainment. I'm pretty shallow about movies. I want them mostly to entertain me.

I couldn't stand "The English Patient" either, but it did have the same sure-fire meme as "Ghost" and "Titanic": the male lead is a guy who's decent enough to give the female lead loads of foreplay. Can't say I blame anybody...
