This video purports to show the crown sheet failure of ex-CP 1278.


Six years later, a crown sheet failure in a steam tractor would kill five people.

Based on the Case-110 tractor accident thermal fuse plugs were known by 1918.
They were welded over in that incident. There were other defects that did
likely contribute.

Operating rail engines likely have them for the same reasons and with good maintenance and operating practices should not result in a failure. It
appears its was a operational error that lead to the failure and additional
design features kept it from being far more severe. But running low water
and bad operating procedures can lead to expected failures.

Steam is a mighty force and all due care is demanded.
