Not Fun to Be in ATL Now

Traffic is going to be a four-starred bitch.
Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency Thursday night after fire officials extinguished a massive fire on I-85 in Atlanta that led to the collapse of a bridge on the crowded interstate.

That's really going to throw a wrench into the gears. There's no good alternatives - diverting traffic onto 75 N will make a terrible situation on 75 into an impossible one. I don't see how the surface streets can do much to route traffic there either.

Yuk.

This guy made a video of him looking on Google Maps and he found a bunch of PVC pipe stored under the overpass that he says is probably the accelerant that heated the fire up enough to collapse the overpass.
We had a gasoline tanker burn up and take down an overpass here in Oakland back in '07, so I guess it does sometimes happen.
Anyway, the guy has a lot of interesting videos about engineering and airplanes and mostly he's trying to cover the situation at the Oroville dam.

Reports this morning of traffic up 50% on the perimeter (I-285), which is already a mess most of the day. Five mile backups reported on surface streets...

"Several months" to replace the three panels on each side...the collapsed panel and the two adjacent plus the same three on the other side. Five lanes of concrete each way for about 150 yards+, good luck.

PVC an accelerant? Color me skeptical.

CenterPuke88 said...

Accelerant, IDK...but as toxic as it is under flame, the people driving through the smoke and sitting nearby may have some issues.

Pipes now identified as HDPE, which will burn at over 1,700 degrees...if it catches.

Three people arrested, only 350 ft to replace, each side.

OK, that makes more sense. HDPE would work as the fuel, but the accelerant remains unknown (or at least undisclosed). It should take more than a homeless guy's campfire to light it up...

One time, a semi caught fire on the Cabin John Bridge just before the afternoon commute. The load was PVC light covers. That closed the bridge for hours. It was a hell of a mess, but at least the bridge wasn't damaged very much.
