The only thing you need to know about the past twenty years (or the past eighty, or the past 104, etc.) is that every mention of any foreign entity is an allegory for some domestic faction. Place that alongside Michael Ledeen's comment about "picking up some crappy little country and throwing it against the wall", and you will find that they fit like the two halves of a torn banknote in a magic trick.
