1911

Animation of a .45 firing.

If you want to get a good look at the internals, first rotate the image so the barrel is pointing to the right. Play the image, then select cutaway and use the up arrow (or a mousewheel) to make the side transparent.

Not bad for a 100 year old design.

As you know, I'm a big fan of revolvers as personal defense weapons -- they're simple, idiot-proof (point the thing and pull the trigger, doh!), and reliable as bricks. No jams, no ejection failures, nada, they just work. But for automatics, the Colt 1911 is the closest thing to a revolver that I've ever encountered. Thing is pretty much as simple, reliable, and bullet-proof as an automatic can possibly be, which isn't surprising when you hear that one of the tests that was required when Browning designed it was that the thing be immersed in mud then fired -- a test which the AK-47, another classic design, also passes with flying colors, and which the new plastic guns like the M-16 and the Barretta 9mm fail big-time. Because, well, soldiers never encounter mud, right? Right?!
