As I've mentioned before, steam locomotives were not favored for use on the light-gauge railways that supplied the Western Front. German observers in balloons would spot the plumes of steam and smoke and then call down artillery fire. So gasoline locomotives were quickly pressed into use.

that's pretty slick, I live in Davenport Iowa and dont think theres any historical site commemorating this business.
