So Why Not Fire Tom Vilsack?

It will still be a terrible injustice unless they give Shirley Sherrod her old job back.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Wednesday he had offered to rehire fired department official Shirley Sherrod, and the White House extended a full-throated apology to her, calling her ouster as the result of an out-of-context video an "injustice."

"It was a decision I regret having made in haste," Vilsack said at a news conference late Wednesday. He said he had offered her a "unique" position.Sherrod told the Associated Press that she's considering the offer.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs conceded Wednesday afternoon that the government had acted rashly and without all the facts when it sought Sherrod's resignation for racially themed comments she made during a recent speech to the NAACP.
Unless, of course, the "unique position" is being the one who gets to tell Vilsack to go home until he grows a pair.

If you believe that Vilsack did this all on his lonesome without being ordered to do so by his superiors (a.k.a. Rahm and Obama), I got a bridge in London to sell ya. Folks like Vilsack simply don't move that fast on political decisions, this was a decision made above his head by the political commisariate in an attempt to get ahead of the news cycle. Preznit Hopey Changey is trying to get plausible deniability by having his underlings do his dirty work, and thereby not having to take the blame if the underling screws it up. But I'll bet you $100 that if you look at Vilsack's phone logs for the hour before he called Sherrod to demand her resignation, you'll find Rahm Emmanuel's number there as the last caller before he called Sherrod.

My thoughts exactly. Rahm had a piece of this crazy story and a phone log would tell it.

Vilsack wouldn't have lifted a finger on this issue on his own. Don't forget, Sherrod said that Cheryl Cook, the deputy undersecretary of whatever it was she did, told her she was getting pressure from the White House. If Cook invoked the White House's name when she shouldn't have, why is she not in trouble? The obvious answer is that she didn't use the WH's name out of turn.

That, plus LRF's immediate anonymous denial and the Messina happy dance should make it clear this wasn't the SecAg's decision.

Then fire Rahm, as well. Like that'll happen anytime soon.

This Administration is going a good job of caving in to its enemies and pissing off its allies.
