The Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, has criticised Nato's plan to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan by 2014, saying coalition troops should remain in the country until government forces are capable of ensuring security.The Russians seem to be feeling their oats recently, maybe they feel up to the task of sending some troops to Afghanistan. (Yeah, that'd go over well amongst the locals.)
Or Lavrov has rather conveniently forgotten that they didn't exactly leave a stable nation behind when they left Afghanistan in 1989.

Russia is more than a little worried that a resurgent Taliban will re-establish links with separatist fanatics in Chechnya and Ingushetia. They haven't forgotten Beslan . . .
