Alternate Brain has the right of it: Clinton has been hanging around, waiting for something to go wrong so she could swoop in and claim what she views as rightfully hers. But it wasn't Obama that stomped on a Bouncing Betty, it was Clinton.
This blogger also has the right of it.
There is almost something of a Greek tragedy, of a Shakespearian play, in the way that the Clinton campaign has gone from an irresistible force to road kill. A year ago, Clinton was raising tens of millions of dollars and, presumably, thinking of how they would campaign against Rudy Giuliani. Clinton was the clear front runner, her campaign obviously figured they would blow everyone away in the first two primaries and then cruise to the convention.
It didn't work out that way. Now, with the smell of desperation enveloping her campaign, Clinton is jettisoning everything she can in order to stay in the game. Clinton has to know that she has burned through more than just millions of her own cash and probably well over a hundred million total. She has burned through her honor, her integrity, and her reputation in more and more futile attempts to stave off defeat. The desperation can be seen in the fact that her campaign is claiming that the Puerto Rican primary, held in a territory whose citizens cannot vote in the general election, is critical.
And so, Clinton is hoping for the worst to happen to her opponent. But the old sayings and myths turn out to have an element of truth: If you pray or scheme for bad things to happen to your opponents, even worse things will befall you.
