"Good Morning. I'm Running for the Republican Presidential Nomination."

George Pataki. Frothy. Miss Lindsey. The Donald. So many are running, now, that future announcements are going to covered in the "news in brief" column of the papers.

They're going to have to trade the GOP Klown Kar in for a short bus.

The funny thing is that Frothy thinks that his campaign was a success in 2012. Which is bullshit, of course. There aren't second-place winners in elections*. What "success" Frothy had in 2012 was because Willard Romney was such a tool that even a few million GOP voters couldn't stomach him. Rmoney still won the nomination, which meant, of course, that Frothy lost.

Tabbie Cleaing

Leave it to Frothy to come in on the side of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Another cop gets confused between a gun and a Taser. One of the few cops I know who carries a Taser carries it in a crossdraw holster, which probably minimizes the chances of making a mistake like this. Unlike in California, the Oklahoma cops seem to be taking the "oh well, shit happens, whaddya want from us" line. Which might change if video surfaces.

Old NFO has a couple of books out. The link will take you to the first one. I enjoyed them both.

Went to a bowling pin match yesterday. I continued my streak of being able to shoot far better with a revolver than one of those newfangled self-litterers. Bowling pins are devilishly hard to shoot, especially considering that if you don't hit them squarely on their CG, they'll fall over and roll around on the table (you have to knock them back off the table to score). And then there are the ones that have been shot up and have added weight from the bullets trapped inside. I didn't feel too bad at my performance with a revolver, considering I was using a Model 15.

Musings about 2016, or "Somebody Please Shoot Me Now".

You can find a lot of musings about 2016 all over the damn place. It's probably true, though, that one of the problems with Hillary Clinton is that she has enough political baggage to fill up a truck and that's never helpful.[1]

While Bill Maher was pinging on the number of candidates who have "waited their turn" and he used Obama as the guy who didn't wait his turn and won, there are other examples of politicians who didn't wait their turn and won: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

The outlier here, of course, is Reagan and Bush the Elder. Reagan waited his turn, but between nearly 20% inflation, a second gas crisis and the Iranian hostage crisis, even Rick Santorum would have been able to beat President Carter.[2] Bush was on his was to losing, but between an inept campaign by the Democrats, a lousy debate performance by Dukakis and the race-baiting of Bush, he turned it around.

In late 1991, it seems from the polling that Bush I was going to win in a walk. The "next turn" Democrats, like Anthony Cuomo, sat it out, figuring that they'd let some poor schmuck get buried and then come in in `96. Didn't work that way.

In 2000, there really wasn't a "next guy" for the GOP, other than Danny Quayle, and nobody was crazy enough for that.[3] And so George W. Bush won the Republican nomination[4] and the election.[5]

So yes, I think Maher is onto something. But it doesn't seem to matter. The GOP candidates for 2016, this far out, appear to be all of the same inhabitants of the 2012 Klown Kar, including Mitt Romney, and with a couple of quasi-new clowns. The Democrats seem to be, so far, Clinton and maybe Biden. Biden, well, you can just write off all but about ten states if he runs, for Shotgun Joe isn't exactly popular.

But, Jesus, why are we even talking about the intrigues in the American Political Whorehouse, now?

[2] OK, maybe not Santorum.
[3] Unrepentant Nazi sympathizer Pat Buchanan might have also had a claim. Both men were interested, but pulled out before the primaries began.
[4] Like his father, his campaign used race-baiting as a tool.
[5] As for his campaign's successful theft of the two general election, let's not go there.

Rick Santorum Has More Reverse Gears Than a John Deere Tractor

Dick Santorum has reversed himself on calling the President a snob, once it was pointed out to Little Frothy that Obama had not said that he wanted everyone to go to college. This was after he backwatered from his "JFK made me throw up" comments.

Santorum's campaign is pretty much toast, anyway. He may win a state here and there. But unless Rmoney loses badly in the Super Tuesday states tomorrow, the GOP is pretty much slouching to nominate Romney. Who will probably do as well as Dukakis and Kerry.

A Theme Song for Ayatolla Rick?

Frothy, the wingnut homophobe,
Always wore a sweater vest,
About his religion,
He said it was the very best.

The adherents of other beliefs,
He proclaimed their faiths phony,
To his narrow way of thinking,
They were guilty of blasphemy!
You can take it from here. But I can't think of a happy ending that doesn't involve Jesus showing up and kicking Frothy's ass around the block a few times.

Rmoney: "I Don't Drink Beer, But Some of My Friends Own Breweries!"

Mitt Romney has to be winning the title of "King of Unforced Errors." Between that one and his "my wife has two Cadillacs" comment, ol' Rmoney is demonstrating that the nameless programmers in Mumbai who wrote Cylon Mitt's operating system forgot to include a self-censorship subroutine.

None of his recent gaffes, to my mind, come close to the "I've been unemployed since 2006 (although I'm worth $250 million and I get paid $20 million a year in investment income[and pay less than 15% in taxes])" whopper. But between the gaffes and the outright lies, almost to the point that his epitaph will read "here lies Mitt Romney, as usual", there has to be hundreds of hours of anti-Romney attack video that he himself has provided.

Meanwhile, the GOP party elites are close to shitting their pants at the idea of Santorum winning the nomination. I fear it, as well. Not because I give a shit what happens to the GOP, for on the contrary, the sooner that collection of cranks is consigned to the trash and a genuine center-right party arises cannot happen too soon for my taste.

No, I fear it because there is always a possibility that Frothy might win. And then we'd have a president who will make every effort to drag this country back to the 15th Century. Santorum has made it clear as glass that his presidency would be guided by the tenets of his religion, not by the Constitution or the laws of the land.

And that, I submit, is ultimately very bad for anyone who does not adhere to Ayatollah Rick's exact views. We went down that road in some of the American colonies in the 17th Century; the Founding Fathers were well aware of the dangers inherent in a faith-based government. The "no established religion" clause of the First Amendment wasn't put in there for giggles.

Finally, could someone enlighten me as to why the Southern Evangelicals like Santorum? I didn't grow up in the South, but I have friends who did, and they told me that the Southern Evangelicals regarded Catholics as idolators and not true Christians. Catholics there were regarded by the Evangelicals as almost being as outside of Christianity as Jews and Mormons. Catholic and Jewish kids stuck together for mutual protection (and there was a lot of intermarriage as a result).

So why are they wrapping their arms around Frothy?

Losing with Santorum

This post is not about whether or not Santorum would be beaten like a gong in the general election. I think that he would, for the reasons that John Oliver discussed last night on the Daily Show.

No, I think that the GOP will lose with Santorum for the same reason that they lost a century ago: The party elite will shudder at the candidate whom the party's grass roots have chosen and they will rig the game to choose someone else. That will not sit well with Santorum's supporters, who will not go along with the anointing by the bosses.

Whether or not Santorum will accept the nomination of a third party will be another question that he'll have to consider.

On the other hand, if the party bosses pull the same trick against Romney, I don't imagine that most people will give a shit. The one consistent thing about ol' Rmoney is that nobody seems to really like him.  Romney's strongest argument for being the nominee is "it's my turn", because the GOP's tradition is that the nominee is the clown who came in second the last time around.*

________________________________
* Think about it. It's been that way since Ford.  McCain came in second in 2000 and was the nominee in `08. Dole came in second in `88 and was the nominee in `96. Bush I came in second in `80 and was the nominee in `88. Reagan came in second in `76 and was the nominee in `80. The one outlier was Buchanan, who came in second in `92 and `96, and who arguably was denied his turn for having the temerity to primary a sitting president (and who was privately blamed by the GOP for weakening Bush enough for Clinton to win).  The same stench of challenging a sitting president didn't seem to attach to Reagan, but he did come in second in `68, so it could be argued that Watergate had displaced Reagan in the Unofficial Line of Succession.

Women for Santorum

We all know that Santorum's campaign is as dead as the last presidential campaign by George Wallace. So this is kind of like kicking a comatose man in the nuts. But it is still funny.

Frothy Speaketh: "Being Raped is a Gift."

Santorum has to be one of the most despicable people walking around in a suit these days.

How is this not a form of slavery?

But what the hell, if you follow Frothy's line of reasoning, then miscarriages should be investigated as homicides.

Well, it Seems That Romney Lost in Iowa

Willard M. Romney may have lost the Iowa caucuses to Rick Santorum.

No word as to whether or not this news has dented the "The Inevitable Mitt" line of dung that is being peddled by the pontificating pundits.

Meanwhile, the McCain campaign's opposition research book on Romney is out on the Intertubes. Apparently somebody on Grampaw's old campaign staff wasn't in tune with McCain's endorsement of the Flip-Flopper.

The Sweet Smell of Desperation

Influential evangelical Christian leaders on Saturday endorsed Rick Santorum for the Republican U.S. presidential nomination, in an attempt to strengthen him as the more conservative alternative to front-runner Mitt Romney.
A fair number of evangelicals regard Catholics as being even worse heathens than they regard Jews. Old-line evangelicals held that Catholics were heathens. For Catholics in the South, it was not unusual for them to come outside after Mass to find that their cars had been leafleted by the Baptists.

It was not unusual for the Catholic and Jewish kid to band together, for they had a common enemy. Among a lot of New York Jews, who were only a couple of generations removed from the immigrants from Slavic Europe, hooking up with Catholics was heavily frowned upon. But things were different in the South.

It is a sign of desperation when those same evangelical church leaders are turning to a Catholic to save them from Flip-Flop Mitt.

Republicans Will Deny That Humans are a Carbon-Based Life Form

It would be so easy to get them to do so. All it would take is for President Obama to talk a few times about how we are all carbon-based forms of life. The Republicans, especially Rick Santorum, would trip over themselves to deny that we are carbon-based life forms. Except for Mitt Romney, who would flip-flop several times on the issue.

Speaking of Flip-Flop Mitt, the Daily Show had tape of him taking only 12 seconds to flip-flop, just go to 4:18 in this clip. That has to be a land speed record for the flip-flop.

Santorum found a way to beat his Google problem: He paid for an ad to be the first result. He's also got the same problem on Bing, but since nobody uses that search engine very much, it doesn't seem to get the same press. But ol' Frothy is currently trying to step away from his little bit of racism.

The Tie Between the Corporate Pirate and the Homophobic Bigot

Frothy the Talibanista and Mittens the Raider pretty much tied the Iowa caucuses. The Cranky Old Racist came in a close third. And Governor Goodhair, who came in fifth, is going to go home to Texas to lick his wounds and decide what to do next.

The big mystery, to me, is Newtie. I have no idea where he got the delusion that he could run a "positive" campaign and not respond in kind to the mud-slinging by Mitten's proxy-PAC. Newtie's done plenty of negative shit-tossing in his time, especially his campaign to mount a coup against a sitting president. It's become obvious over the last twelve-plus years that you can't let a campaign of slander and innuendo go unanswered; somebody has to climb down into the sewer and do battle.

Now here is another point: Republicans are big on the idea that in elections to bring in unions, a win is a majority of all eligible voters, not just all voters. So if we apply that rule to the Iowa caucuses, this is the rough result:

None of them: 80%
Mittens: 5%
Frothy: 5%
Cranky Old Racist: 4%.

(Cartoon source)

And more:
DES MOINES (The Borowitz Report) – Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was overjoyed today after finishing the Iowa caucuses in a virtual tie with a walking joke who wears sweater vests.

“The eight people have spoken!” exclaimed Mr. Romney, who was joined by supporters celebrating his .0006% margin of victory.

Caucus Day in Iowa

At least we are going to finish this chapter of the latest iteration of the current Wingnut Soap Opera. Frothy may have timed his turn as the Anybody But Mitt Candidate perfectly. Or not.

But at least this current circus is now opening its first act. The overture has been going on for for too long; Mittens has been campaigning since November 5th of 2008. After all, Willard can afford to, as he is getting millions of dollars a year from Bain, his firm of corporate raiders. Having that kind of income stream is pretty nice for a man who whined about being unemployed while building a huge mansion in California.
