Your Sunday Morning Jet Noise

The Sud Aviation Caravelle, the first mid-range jet airliner.

The Caravelle stood out because of its rounded triangular windows. Untied flew a number of them. UAL retired them the same year that they retired their last DC-6.

As far as I can tell, none of them are still flying.

I rode Caravelles once or twice...last ones I saw were blackened hulks out at the ass end of Stapleton, being used for firefighting practice.

How symbolic that this one finally gets eclipsed by a Gooney Bird...

BTW, the Nina and Pinta were caravels.

Last one flying seems to have been in Africa with Air Burundi. It was flying in 2006, and the airline folded in 2009...but no definitive dates out there.

The thing I think of when a see a Caravelle is how like the Piaggio Avanti the forward fuselage appears from both the side and front views. Might be interesting to see if any of the Sud designers were involved with Piaggio in the 70's.
