UPRR 4014 without a diesel.

4014 has reported been fitted with full PTC, so it doesn't need a diesel for control purposes. That must have been no mean feat to install on an eighty-year-old locomotive.

From what I was able to gather:

"While Big Boy has operated with a LeaPTC system since 2021, says a UP statement, the new equipment permits operation without support of a diesel locomotive.".

Initially all the gear needed was still in the diesel but the display
and controls were remote linked to the 4014 cab. This still required sensors and ability to control 4014s breaking system. That allowed
testing to see how it worked in the steam engine. Follow up over
the last year was to package the system and install it in the tender
left side behind the panel that says fire hose. Apparently it needed
more power so backup battery and a second dynamo was added to support
that, this is unconfirmed but likely. Items like the dual GPS antennas
and data link antennas are mounted on top the tender in a fairly
inconspicuous place. It main goal was the installation was to be
fully qualified but with minimal visible alterations external to a
historic engine.

There is a price, without the diesel to provide dynamic braking
more cars are needed for their brakes. This is to preserve the
brake shoes on the 4014 which are costly unique custom parts.

Success with this means that UP844 will also get the system.

CP2816 also has a similar system.

SF3751 PTC and MU controls.

The article covers much of the emergence of the PTC using the
diesels hardware. Originally fr other disels in MU configuration.

The instigator was that many railroads even diesel powered only had
a limited number of PTC engines so the ability to built up MU based
consists was a economic driver as only one had to have it and the
controls from it could be shared.

Fully integrated system was still needed for some Steam power rails
as they didn't have a diesel they could simply link to. The cost
then is get a diesel or put it in the Steam engine of choice.
Dragging a diesel is not only costly its also undesired.
