Tone-Deaf CEO's; Dunkin Donuts Edition

The CEO of Dunkin Brands, which owns the doughnut chain, thinks that paying people $15/hr is "absolutely outrageous."

Right. This from a guy who was paid over ten million clams last year. (I'll take my coffee and doughnut with a side order of pitchforks and tumbrels.)

There may be reasons why paying a wage of $15/hr isn't a good idea, but when really rich fuckers start saying "it's outrageous", they sound as though they might as well be saying "let them eat cake"; like the Aussie billionaire and heiress who got upset at having to pay more than $2 a day.

You probably don't employ anyone, do you?
Most people aren't worth $5.00 per hour, much less minimum wage.

I run a business, finding competent, pleasant, observant people is difficult. Often we go for two out of three.

We gave up on not too terribly tattooed a long time ago. Now, as long as they have no offensive visible tattoos...(swastika, foul language, etc) we will hire them.

Then we gotta train 'em. basic change counting (the register does the math for them) basic safety, etc. Plus the actual job.

Then we hope that they can stay sober long enough to come to work. and that they will work at their job.

If we are lucky, they'll stay 6 moths before they fail a drug test, or get busted for something and go BACK to jail...

$15 per hour? Please.

I've had hiring and firing authority before.

My feeling is that you get what you pay for. And that applies to hiring people.

Not in the past 5 years, it hasn't. THe rise of the State benefits has changed the equation drastically.

"Most people aren't worth $5.00 per hour, much less minimum wage." Do you interview and check references?

Hire older people. That's what I did and it worked great. My youngest was in her mid-20's and the oldest was in her mid-70's but the majority of the 21 people ranged from mid 40's to late 50's. I wanted people who would show up, were courteous, and able to learn. They made considerably less than $15.00/hour and were worth far more than they were paid.

B,

I understand from your comment why your business can't afford to pay $5 per hour. Do you understand, or rather do you even care?

:) Uh oh. Typographical error. That was meant to be $15.00/hour (fifteen). I'm sure you realized that. Well, perhaps you didn't.
