Is there something hard-wired into cats that they can only barf up hairballs between the hours of 1AM and 4AM?
Just asking.

YES. Cats are designed by nature to wear down the will of humans.
I don't know what's worse: hearing the *horrrrrnk* as they hack one up, cleaning one up, or stepping in one.
This is the worst: Having one of the twin sisters run up from the basement with a mouse in its mouth, with the sister in tow. Watching them juggle it between them. Trying and failing to rescue the mouse with the dust pan and brush. (I've done this successfully many times, just not last night.) Seeing the mouse escape and hide under furniture.
Later, waking up from a sounds sleep, hearing the muffled "Mrowr... mmrawr... mrow!" coming closer and closer to the bed, in complete darkness.
CM, stepping in one is the worst, followed by the "horrrrrnkkk" sound. Cleaning them up, if they've not been stepped in, is the easiest part.
Unless you have white carpets.
Cats are Evil's way of moving itself from place to place, but they're also nocturnal. It's a double whammy.
Answer: No. Cats hawk up hairballs generally after eating. So if you feed them at 6pm rather than 10pm, you'll end up stepping in a steaming pile of hairball with your bare feet while wobbling down the hallway with two baskets of laundry in your hands at 8pm, rather than at 4am.
This lesson in hairballology courtesy of yesterday's adventures in my central hallway, which, thankfully, has a tile floor rather than carpet thus the smeared hairball was cleared off the floor with nothing but household cleanser and paper towels. My foot, on the other hand, got a swift trip to the shower after I hobbled around on the heel for a while :).

I feed them around 6PM. The food is gone by 8PM/
So I guess the answer is, cats will automatically hawk up the hairball whenever there is the greatest chance of you stepping on it with bare feet :). Evil creatures, eh? But ah, so soft and furry and cuddly...
