It seems that other folks are saying close to the same thing as I.
On another note, Paul Campos asks "how much does it cost" when AF jets escort airliners with unruly passengers. I would suggest that the more pertinent question is: "What are those jets planning to do?"
The cockpit doors are fortified. The pilots are not going to open them, even if a group of terrorists gets control of the cabin and starts to slit the throats of everyone else in the cabin. If a passenger acts up, then, the pilots are not going to open the door to the flight deck. Those in the cabin cannot get control of the airplane and even if they try, the clear history is that the passengers now will fight them.
The fighter escort is useless unless they plan to shoot down the airliner. Does anyone seriously contemplate blowing an airliner out of the sky because there is an unruly passenger aboard?
