I have had it up to here with the fake outrage over Gen. Clark's comments that being a jet pilot and getting shot down doesn't qualify one to be President. "How dare they impugn McCain's record," the Republicans wail.
Spare me. Two words for them: "Swift Boat." They had no problems with impugning John Kerry's record. (They also had no problems with impugning James Stockdale's record in 1992.)
The Republicans, to this day, have lambasted Bill Clinton for being a "draft dodger." Yet in 1988, they had no problem choosing a vice-presidential candidate, Dan Quayle, who was a draft-dodger and they certainly had no problem with Still-President Bush, who was a draft-dodger. (Yes, I know both men served in the National Guard. Joining the National Guard during the Vietnam War was how rich and well-connected young men avoided going to Vietnam.)
And then there was Dick Cheney (five deferments, because he "had other priorities") and John Ashcroft (six deferments), draft dodgers, both of them, along with the rest of the Chickenhawks and neo-cons, damn few of whom ever wore a uniform of any kind.
This time around, the Democrats intend not to be Swift-Boated. Smears will be both debunked and answered in kind. Mud is going to be slung, hard, in both directions.
The Republicans, with two extremely negative campaigns run by Karl Rove and cheered on by Fox News and the Hindenburgs of hate radio, have called the tune. Now let's see if they can dance to the music.
So every comment about Michelle Obama "not being proud of being an American" is going to be answered with a comment about Cindy McCain, who stole a married man away from his first wife and then stole drugs from a charity that she set up, barely avoiding having to do hard time. Every comment about Barack Obama's friends in Chicago will be answered with reminders of the Keating Five and how McCain colluded in the looting of the saving and loan industry, which had to be bailed out by the American taxpayers to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars.
So let the games begin. No whining about "it's not fair."

Personally I've been wailing, "McCain!? Are you fucking kidding me?!"
There's really nothing that the Democratic party needs to do in this election but remind folks that John McCain is John McCain to keep Republicans from voting for him.
