HR's job is to keep the company from being sued. That's it. If they can keep the company from getting sued by finding some pretext to fire you, that's what they'll do. And they're smart enough to not put it on paper or electrons that this is what they're doing.

This is why sexual harassers get to stay with companies while people who complain about them get pushed out.
