What Republicans Have Wrought in Taiwan

Thanks to the Republicans' screwing around with aid to Ukraine, two-thirds of the Taiwanese now believe that the United States is not a trustworthy ally, that in the event that the PRC attacks them, they will be left to twist in the wind.

And if Xi believes the same thing, it will be game on sooner rather than later. Because history is pretty clear that wars get going when the aggressor believes that their victim and friends won't fight.

If war comes to the Pacific, be sure to thank a Republican.

Putting a positive spin on things, this is analogous to the recent EU realization that they have to be credibly prepared to defend themselves in the event of a US abdication for whatever reason.Recent US politics has made it plain to the international community that our commitment to protecting them is,shall we say, conditional.Ideally ,in the near to long term, this should result in a broader self-defense coalition that is less susceptible to wedge issues than one that assumes that the US will do the heavy lifting.

If nothing else, a defensive alliance among strong partners will always beat weak partners allying with one really strong partner because it has fewer failure points.

The problem with decentralized defense in that manner, MarkS, is vulnerability to things like Orbán. The size of the EU/NATO alliance makes that a significant issue. The strongman in the leader country issue is more unique, but may be an increasing one going forward.

On Trumps plate is also North Korea. The latest 38 North analysis is not good, and it goes back to Trump’s decision to make it an all or nothing demand in Hanoi in 2019, which may have caused Kim Jong Un to literally snap.
