Travel Tip: Cancel Your Flights and Drive

Because you're going to get on an airplane and you're going to be searched by people who are working without getting paid and not knowing when they may be paid.

Apropos of this post: This.

Really fun bit is the OPM line on leave is, unless your bargaining unit has another agreement, when a shutdown happens and you are an excepted employee...

If you have scheduled leave, that leave is cancelled and you are ordered to work.

If you do not report, you will be shown AWOL, not furloughed.

This even applies to employees who are in the middle of a scheduled vacation and cannot return in time.

In the past, furloughed employees got paid, AWOL coded employees did not.

In short, the TSA employee might be there because they were ordered to be, despite having had paid holiday plans elsewhere that just got destroyed...in addition to wondering just when the next paycheck after 12/31 will be. The next pay period closes on 1/5/19, so unless things are settled on or before about 1/2/19, then the next check will likely be delayed. Ask yourself how many of the wage grade and low level salary grade Government employees live paycheck to paycheck and think about the chaos about to happen. Even those with reserves will be losing money because of having to tap those reserves.

Maybe these people should contact their Congress critter. When I was a federal worker, we always got the back pay we lost during a shutdown. Do your homework

Promise of back pay doesn’t put food on the table.

Tewshooz, that is never assured until Congress passes a bill. Even then, AWOL coded employees do NOT get paid. Were you an excepted employee, and if you were, did you take any days off suring the shutdown? Or did you get sent home?

As for homework, this is about my seventh shutdown, I'm plenty familiar. My Congress critter ignored the last four letters, care to guess his party affiliation?

Centerpuke88 is correct I had to go in, despite being very sick and most likely contagious, as they would not approve sick leave. I spent the next 8 hours in a tiny room by myself as my coworkers didn’t want me anywhere near them, and I don’t blame them. Those on AL had to cancel and report to work.

Yep, under a shutdown, they cannot approve any leave. Leave is considered an expenditure not covered by the extingency rules, and thus is unapprovable...so, as a bonus, that TSA agent patting you down might just be sick AND contagious...and have been told to report to work or else.
