Someone has made a hand-held railgun, also known as a Gauss rifle.
At this point in its development, it's less impressive than a 13th Century Chinese handgonne. No doubt that Alco and Baldwin weren't too impressed just over a century ago by the first few diesel locomotives. So for now, the gun manufacturers probably aren't too worried.
But the electric rifles are coming, nonetheless.

I can see that the power requirements would be a bitch at this time but new battery teck is just around the corner. It might do better with an electromagnetic firing mechanism instead of solenoids also.
I LOVE the idea of buying ammo at the hardware store.

Where do you hook up the jumper cables?
they'll have to soon use ceramics for ammo cuz even tungsten will deform at the klicks-per-second velocities that are coming.
