Assassination

Assassination, in a functioning democracy, is an act of pure evil. Some clowns, armed with a gun (or other weapon) seeks to make our choice for us.

And usually, the outcome is worse for all of us. But that's a topic for another time.

If you don't like or even hate a particular candidate for office, then go volunteer for their political campaign. Donate money, hold fundraisers, contact people, get off your fucking ass and do the hard work. Register to vote. Get your friends to register to vote. Get the supporters of your candidate to go to the polls. Leave your guns/bombs/knives at home.

Who is in any particular office is a choice all of us have to make. It should not be up to one stupid jagoff with a gun.

I've seen too many in this country in the last 60+ years. The
net effect is people were killed and others hurt for no good
result.

It only takes one crazed person to make it a real mess.

We are not to the cartridge box, not even close. Vote damn it.

This is not a functioning democracy, and no one -- even those who are, at any moment, exploiting the dysfunction -- imagines that it is.

I watched the assignation with the same horror and contempt that I would assume most every other American did. I watched some of the various news outlets and their version of commentary, to make certain that I got the point of view not just from the conservative or the liberal side.
I was not shocked, but rather I was encouraged by the fact that almost to a network the coverage was exactly what I felt was proper for the situation. All of the people that I saw, from Faux News to MSNBC to CNN and a couple of local stations newsrooms, were rightfully aghast and angry that our political discourse had devolved into a thing that resembles a 3rd world election, where the only thing that matters is to win, even if it means throwing untrue things at your opponent.
Sadly, I posted on the book of face immediately after seeing the breaking news of the incident, just how sure I was that President Joe Biden would come out very quickly and condemn the actions of a coward. Which of course he did. I pointed out that while I did not agree with his political leanings, he was still a man of honor and would try and heal the nation with his words.
The thing that bothered me was that one of the people who read my posts on that social media platform actually came out and said that President Biden was not a fundamentally decent man, as I had said. So it seems that while most Americans are well meaning and willing to attempt to help heal the nation, there is still that group of people who are so very partisan that they are willing to cast stones at a man who, while many do not like his political viewpoint, has served our country for decades.
I am old enough to remember quite vividly when former president Nixon resigned, with the unelected Gerald Ford, himself a fundamentally decent man, was eviscerated by many due to his pardon of president Nixon. While many said that he had made a deal with Nixon that he would pardon him after Ford took over the oval office, I don't think that Ford would have been a party to that.
Ford was another person who had devoted most of his lifetime to serving our nation, and because of the horrible rancor at the criminal acts of Nixon, the anger manifested itself at Ford, the only available target for the anger, however justified. Ford wrote an autobiography called A Time to Heal.
I hope that President Biden follows that same path, stressing that our nation was now at the crossroads of another Time to Heal. While it would be an aid to his campaign, it also would be the right thing to do. It is of note that the President and his campaign immediately began to pull all ads while they figured out just what attack ads needed to come down, due to what happened to former president Trump. In those actions it showed me that no matter what missteps and mistakes President Biden has made, he still remains Presidential, and it reinforces his decency and humanity. That might give him a boost in many people's eyes.
Sadly I did see a couple of the talking heads saying that this incident was a false flag operation, designed to help Trump, and that it was just one more thing to put the former president down. It is of course possible, but unlikely.
If the shooter had succeeded the turmoil in America would have been unthinkable. So we need to be grateful that Trump was not killed or seriously injured to the point where he could not continue to run for the office. There are idiots on both sides who it seems are looking for an excuse to become violent. If there is one thing that our country doesn't need it is a violent attempted coup or a martial law declaration to stop such fighting. May your upcoming week be filled with hope, for the nation and the election, that it will be completed with no bloodshed or other criminal acts. The world will be watching closely and that would be the last thing we should project.

My horrible Congressman Glenn Grothman made a speech saying we needed to bring back the 60s. I think he's about as old as I am so he should know that the 60s were horrible. A President gunned down, the President's brother and a candidate himself gunned down, a civil rights leader gunned down civil, rights workers doing nothing more than registering people to vote murdered with no consequences for the killers. The 60s were a decade of political murders. Anyone who wants to bring that back is fucked in the head.

There were a few Republicans, who always seem to be way out there, almost immediately claiming Biden was behind the shooting. It's par for the course for MTG but one of the possible Trump pick for vice president, JD Vance, was right out there making accusations.
And many on line are trying to twist around the fact that the alleged shooter was a registered Republican because it doesn't fit their narrative.

I didn't like the Nixon pardon lest there be another attempt at an imperial presidency.

Reagan got an 8-12% ratings bump for about 8 months after he was shot.
