Make Your Reservations for the Last Helicopter from the American Embassy in Kabul

US and Taliban negotiators have agreed on a draft framework for a peace deal seeking to put an end to the 17-year conflict in Afghanistan, Washington's top negotiator has said.

US negotiators held six days of talks with the Taliban in Qatar last week.

The Afghan president has made a new call for direct talks with the Islamist group, but they have so far refused, dismissing the government as "puppets"
.
And so it goes, in a direction that has been obvious for over a decade.

The current government may last, for a time. But it will fall, eventually. If the incumbent Afghani leaders have learned the lesson of Najibullah Ahmadzai, they will not wait around to hand over the keys.

Is it possible? Could we finally stop shedding American blood in Afghanistan? No one has ever, ever, won there, except for their own rebels.
Could we possible, finally, be done there?
Do I even dare to hope

I have mixed feelings about this. Though of the dishonorable, I none-the-less have an emotional connection. There are helos off that coast I had my hands on. The bug out feels no better today than it did then. We threw a lot away.

On the other hand, I've been screaming about the Graveyard of Empires since Rambo III.

They'll be a haven for terrorists again, soon. If not al-Qaeda then maybe ISIS or some other, newly hatched crowd of crazed Jihaders.

And more American money ends up in Swiss banks.

For what it's worth, Afghanistan was twice ruled by outsiders: Genghis Khan and the Sikhs. Both did it with mountains of skulls. Ref: The Apotheosis of War by Vereshchagin, https://thevelvetrocket.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/apotheosis-of-war-vasily-vereshchagin.jpg

Pretty soon, we'll be able to have new soldiers fighting alongside their dads. Human interest story, there! Or more likely, the sons will just be using their dads' equipment. Because the dads will be dead.
