Gaddafi is using tanks and artillery on the people of Libya in an attempt to suppress the revolt.

No surprise there, really, he is playing by Hama Rules. Obviously power in Egypt and Tunisia was in the hands of their armies, not their dictators, which is why those guys are gone. Libya is apparently different.

If Gaddafi has to kill off most of the population of the country in order for his regime to survive, that is what he will do. He doesn't need too many live Libyans in the first place; most of the work in the oil fields is done by foreign contractors. So Gaddafi will happily massacre everyone.
