Windows computers strike me as being equivalent to automobiles prior to World War II; you either have to know a really good mechanic or you have to be able to do some work on them yourselves. This is, believe it or not, an improvement, for it wasn't long ago that Windows was in a pre-World War I state compared to gasoline cars, where you had to know how to fix them in order to do anything with them.
(All you AppleBots can kindly back away from the keyboard and STFU. I am not going to pay that kind of premium for something that won't open .doc or .wpd files. If you can't run WordPerfect on it, it is useless to me.)
So last night, I started my laptop. It said my "profile was corrupted" and it created an entirely new administrator folder. Of course, my email mailboxes are in the old one, so they have to be moved over carefully, as are a whole bunch of other stuff. Most of my apps survived, but not my Palm database. I tried a couple of restores with a "config safe" app that did zero.squat. At one point, it occurred to me that I would get a lot of pleasure from putting the computer on a concrete surface and then pounding with the butt of my Garand.
I don't begrudge all of the Microsoft million/billionaires their money. But it would be nice if they could make something that would (a) run the gazillion of apps that have been written fo Windows and (b) didn't run like the kludgiest piece of shit one has ever seen.
