Your Sunday Morning Jet Noise

Il-76:

\

It's not terribly unusual to see these trashhaulers at larger airports around the country. Capable of carrying outsized cargo (and 55 tons of it), the Il-76 doesn't need handling equipment to load or unload cargo, unlike the commercial Western jet freighters.

That airplane looks big, but it's actually no bigger than a DC-3.

It's an optical ilyushin.

Why the lower set of windows? It looks like a refitted WW2 bomber like that.

w3ski, that's the navigator's station. When the Il-76 was designed, the Soviets pretty much used ADF abd/or pilotage.

Of more interest is the tail-gunner's station right under the rudder.

After reading you SWA story above and then checking these comments, I found myself wondering just what upcharge Spirit would put on a tail-gunner seat.

Passed the link onto a friend, who replied:
" used to know a guy who defected from Romania and worked in the aviation field there.

They used to call Ilyushins Fuel to Noise Convertors.

(of course, after next major Solar Event wipes out electronics for a while, these beasts will still fly while there is still Jet Fuel to fill them...)"
