Taking That GOP Train to Crazy Town

The chairwoman of the GOP in Georgia thinks that straight men will marry each other "for the benefits".
“You may be as straight as an arrow, and you may have a friend that is as straight as an arrow,” [Sue] Everhart said. “Say you had a great job with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. I mean, what would prohibit you from saying that you’re gay, and y’all get married and still live as separate, but you get all the benefits? I just see so much abuse in this it’s unreal. I believe a husband and a wife should be a man and a woman, the benefits should be for a man and a woman. There is no way that this is about equality. To me, it’s all about a free ride.”
How many men and women entered into sham marriages with each other for the benefits? Other than "green card" marriages, how prevalent has this been? "Hey, let's get married so you can have access to my employer health care. We won't even have to live together or shit!" Really, that's probably been the basis for, oh, I don't know, no marriages?

An inference could be drawn that Everhart probably got married for that reason.*

What kind of a twisted paranoid nut does it take to come up with shit like this?

Somehow, the way conservatives talk about marriage always sounds like courses in animal husbandry.

I'm sure that some of them love their spouses, but let's say it wouldn't surprise me to find that many conservatives have committed wedlock for other reasons.

I could never figure out why my father believed what he believed. And there was no middle ground. But he was starting to dislike the Republicans toward the end. They were doing some stuff that didn't make sense even to him. They just keep getting stranger.

On an unrelated note, but something you might be interested in, do you have any comment on the following blog post (not mine, don't even know the guy): http://chrishernandezauthor.com/2013/04/01/women-in-combat-myths-and-realities/

I see some similar issues with my 2nd job on rare occasions.

BTW, if I violated one of the rules, I'm sorry. I couldn't figure out any other way to get a message through since you don't have any contact info, which I completely understand.

I'll go back to lurking in dark corners now.

I think he's got a point, partially. There has to be, obviously, the right standards for being an 11B and so on. But the standards have to be related to the job and not designed to exclude people who could do the job.

(An example would be that in 1914, the medical doctors screening men for enlistment would reject anyone who was missing too many teeth or were too short or had bad eyesight. By 1917, as long as they weren't functionally blind, they were accepted, even if they were short and toothless.)

And in 1962, the dude in the bunk next to mine in advanced infantry school at Fort Dix, an 18-year-old "flat country hillbilly" from somewhere in Delaware, went to the dental clinic with all his teeth and came back with none of them. (They fitted him up with a set of false choppers a couple of days later.) Seems he had too many cavities, and too much plaque and stuff for them to spend their time fixing. It was more militarily cost-effective just to pull everything out of his mouth that wasn't his tongue. He wanted to go to Airborne school next, and while I lost track of him, I wouldn't be surprised if he was the only soldier in the whole U.S. military who had to take his teeth out before pulling the ripcord.

To truck out a tired old cliche, you can't make this stuff up.

Very crankily yours,

An uncle of mine had enough things wrong with him to fill up part of the Merck Manual. When the Army drafted him in 1944 and he passed the induction physical, my grandmother said that if they were taking men like him, then it was time to start learning German. (The Army wised up a handful of months later and gave him a medical discharge.)

"straight men will marry each other "for the benefits".

This brings to mind something that ya'll might appreciate, which I occasionally say to white, male, reactionary "conservatives."

After 500 years of world domination, I finally became a middle-aged white man just in time for that to become an oppressed minority. If only I'd been born a poor, black lesbian so I could take advantage of all the great perks they get.

How can these people really play the victim card? Not surprisingly, about half of them get my point.
