If you believe the rumors, the F-104 killed more Luftwaffe pilots than Spitfires did.

Well, they DID take 1.4 people to fly them correctly, and their low speed handling characteristics were nil... Just sayin...
I believe the point was best made by the opposition of Erich Hartmann (352 kills) to the Luftwaffe adopting the F-104. They cashiered him for that, and then had 252 aircraft crashes and 115 pilots lost (meaning Hartmann still out performed the Starfighter). Of course, the later revelation that Lockheed bribed their way into the contract was not a real surprise. The real problem was the introduction of a highly sophisticated aircraft into a newly formed and poorly trained force. After a safety stand down, the German record improved quite a bit.

Ever heard of a 1974 satirical Robert Calvert album called "Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters"?
..."They don't all crash, you know..."
"It would be an honor to crash in such a plane..."
