I always felt safe flying in these. They could take a punch and stay in the air.
Like a bomber pilot, flying straight and level at a precise speed in the teeth of the best AAA and fighters takes nerves of steel. Of course most of these British jumpers ended up dead or POWs shortly in Monty's failed 'pencil like' (Patton's words) thrust. Brit tanks stalled and could not rescue the lightly equipped paratroopers before defence collapsed. Like the Ivans just did at Antonov airport in Ukraine with their silly MP riot police paratroopers.
Tod, I hadn't twigged on the similarities between Operation Market Garden and the Russian attempt to quickly take Kyiv.
