You can read about it here. The "alt-right" and MRA types got in a snit over the casting.

"Nearly all of the major characters are non-Whites and the main character is an empowered White female.....This film should be boycotted.....The new films are going to flop big league anyway. You can push the female heroes as much as you like, but even most women don’t find it interesting."

$420 million globally in the first week says otherwise. The poor wingnuts are too tiny to even be noticed in the film marketplace of today.

Real hard-core racists don't accept Latin Americans, Middle Easterners, or sometimes even southern or eastern Europeans as being "white". I've seen some really drawn-out and ridiculous arguments about exactly who qualifies as "white". A lot of this stuff is driven by resentment, and Hispanics are a major target these days. Same with the hostility toward "empowered white females". Considering how fanatical and obsessive these people are about their racist and fascist ideas, they probably have a lot of experience with rejection by women who know a weirdo when they see one.

As for female heroes in SF movies, there was Ripley an the Alien movies too. It's not a new thing. The Turd Reich guys are just projecting their own resentments onto a general public that doesn't share them.
