As a fellow Cold Warrior I just want to thank you for your blog, which I discovered last spring. Also enjoy learning about the Navy side of things on "Babes in the Open, Fire for Effect!" When I was a Weapons Platoon Leader in Germany, one of my mortar section leaders had been a Forward observer in Nam. He was trying to get some support for his unit when a powerful signal came in, offering help. He gave the target coordinates, then the station told him "Roger. Advise that this will be "Danger Close since you are within 1 kilometer to target" . He replied, "Who are you, and What the hell are you firing?"

"This is USS New Jersey, firing 16" Naval rifles."

Oh yes, he pulled his unit back and then the earth shook.

Anyway, glad I'm finding several progressive Liberal military officer bloggers like you, Jim Wright of Stonekettle Station, and MC Farrell.
