Ever since Reagan destroyed the federal pension system and replaced it with Social Security, the quality of federal employees has gone steadily downhill. People go to work in government jobs despite the lower pay and bureaucratic hassles for two reasons: job security (government rarely lays off) and early retirement (in most states you can retire with a pension after 30 years). Take away those two things, and the only people you'll get to work for you are the dregs.
In the end Reagan was as evil as Gee Dubya, but at least he was a smart evil, too smart to let our troops stay in the middle of a Mideast civil war. Sigh. When even the venal criminal Reagan where half his administration ended up in jail having to be pardoned by Reagan looks good compared to Gee Dubya, ya know Gee Dubya is a lousy President...

You must be in a different country than I am, or a lot younger; they weren't any better back then than they are now.
BobG, I can remember when air traffic control had actual competent air traffic controllers and enough of them. You were probably too young to remember Reagan firing them all though and replacing them with an inadequate number of incompetents.
