Godspeed, Senator

Bob Dole, who overcame grievous World War Two combat wounds to become a pre-eminent figure in U.S. politics as a longtime Republican senator from Kansas and his party's unsuccessful 1996 presidential nominee, died on Sunday. He was 98.

Dole, known for a wit that ranged from self-deprecating to caustic, died in his sleep, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation said. Dole announced in February that he had been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and would begin treatment
.

Bob Dole had more grit, determination and bravery than most men. He could have given up and died in the 1940s, but he kept fighting.

He was a good soldier for his party. Jerry Ford asked him to be his attack dog in 1976 and he fulfilled the role. He said some things he later regretted (saying that he went for the jugular and it was his own). He also had a great sense of humor.

One of his better quips:

"There they are - See No Evil, Hear No Evil and Evil." - upon seeing, respectively, former presidents Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon together at the White House.

He wrote two books about political humor and appeared on Letterman the day after he lost the 1996 election, a defeat he accepted with grace and wit (unline some other schmuch of recent renown).

Dole was a master of the possible, he wasn't a visionary. That's what it can take to get bills into law, but was he a great senator? Probably not. But he was effective, and that's no small thing. He came from a day when politicians would compromise and work together to better the country.

He tried to make this country a better place. That's a worthy epitah for any polician.

"a defeat he accepted with grace and wit"
He accepted it because he lost, cleanly and without fraud. There was no question, no "anomalies" no sudden shifts in the vote counts in the middle of the night, no mail-in ballots with no accountability.....

This from Lawyersgunsmoney blog:
"...his support for the Americans With Disabilities Act. Having said that, I’ve exhausted the good things I can think of regarding this “lion of the Senate.”
Dole was, along with Ronald Reagan, just about the only prominent Republican who supported Dick Nixon right to the bitter end in 1974. He was one of the few establishment GOP figures who endorsed Donald Trump in 2016, and after four years of Trumpism he didn’t change his mind about that..."

B, keep on repeating your Trumpist Big Lie about the election being stolen by widespread fraud. I'm pretty sure that few here are addled enough to believe your claims.

Would it be too early to mention that he threw his support behind Trump in 2016?

If so, consider this:

Nero Wolfe : I pay him the tribute of speaking of him and feeling about him precisely as I did when he lived; the insult would be to smear his corpse with the honey excreted by my fear of death.

Long ago, I admired him for his service in WWII, suffering severe injury, and then coming back home and serving his country as an elected official, but he was an early and enthusiastic Trump supporter. I found that more than a little disappointing. For a man who purportedly believed in the American experiment, it was an epic betrayal...

Dole, unlike others I could name, didn’t buy into Trump’s Big Lie.

Reported on Friday:

“Anybody that doesn’t think there wasn’t massive Election Fraud in the 2020 Presidential Election is either very stupid, or very corrupt!” Trump said in a statement that was posted to Twitter by spokeswoman Liz Harrington.

So with the double negative in the statement, anyone who actually believes in the election fraud IS very stupid or corrupt, according to the ex-President.

Sometimes you just have to spell it out for some folks.

He was an advocate for the Americans with Disabilities Act. As a person who is in a wheelchair, i will always be grateful for that. I think he was basically good but he was from a different time. I guess he was a life long Republican, back when that was not a q-crazy xenophobic death cult.

This is how we vote in Washington County, Utah+

You have to have a driver license or state identification number. You must have an SSI number.

They will be asking if you are employed, and if so, in what capacity?

They will ask for your street address. Do not panic. My street is always same as my zipcode.

I just tell them my PO Box.

Election Days used to be a big deal around here. We left it to our pollster grannys. They had cookies and voting booths and a general meeting.
We don't do that anymore. We vote by mail, but because the republicans, we prefer to use the drop boxes at our library, high school, or city office .

There are some people who wish we didn't vote at all.
They just want everything to be hunkydory. I think voting by mail is ok. I think every citizen should vote. I think these politicians should send out ballots.

In my community, these drop boxes are working ok.
