It was a pipeline pumping engine for a natural gas pipeline.
They or similar were also used for running a whole factory though
shafting and belts, providing electricity, and pumping water
among other uses.
What was impressive is the number of hours they would run
continuously.
There is a nice Corliss up in Maine (Maine transportation
museum, Knox county).
