Your Sunday Morning Rotor Noise

H-21:


The H-21 was designed for Arctic operations. Of course, the Army tried using them in Vietnam. It didn't do very well.

Was that the “flying banana”? And just how could a chopper designed for sub-zero operations not be a great choice for Vietnam...I mean, it almost hits freezing in the far north and the mountains, etc?

CP88, I believe "sub-zero" meant like 60 below...

Interesting that the H-34/HUS,a helicopter with the same R-1820 air-cooled engine, fared better. I was in several "vertical envelopments" in I Corps in 1966. The different location of the engine probably helped with coolong.

Both models were used extensively by the French in Algeria (desert and mountains, and it can get cold), which gave the American Army added impetus to create an airmobile division.
