After last weekend's mid-air collision that killed nine people over the Hudson River, look for the Feds to "do something." Senator Chuck Schumer will probably try again to close the VFR corridor.
Eight people were killed on the Taconic Parkway north of New York City two weekends ago when one of the drivers was tanked to the gills on a Sunday morning. I haven't seen any calls for closing down the Taconic.
It's sort of like another recent incident in the New York metro area. An illegal immigrant was driving while drunk and killed two people. Various politicians, who were seeking to capitalize on the issue of illegal immigration, held "town hall" meetings, ostensibly about both DWI and illegal immigration, but you can bet your ass which of the two topics was talked about the most. After the crash on the Taconic, there weren't any calls for town hall meetings or for "something to be done."
Tragedies seem to bring out the worst in politicians, as they try to use them to build their political base and to push their pet ideas.
Small aircraft are not the "security risks" that Schumer claims they are, but you can bet your ass that he will not hesitate to claim that in his push to close the Hudson Rifer VFR corridor.

It's amazing that the people who yell the loudest about "government interfering in their lives" are the first ones who want government to protect us from everything.
Whatever annoys us, that's what's at fault. Nevermind the facts.
Yeah, this shit is infuriating. People are so fucking bad at assessing relative risk and danger.
It's like, every time some cyclist gets flattened by an inattentive aggressive car driver it's all: "ZOMFG!!! Bicycling on the street is sooooo DANGEROUS!!!!!" What about the ~45,000 motherfuckers killed in CAR CRASHES every fucking year??
More people in the US die by drowning in their own bathtubs or swimming pools every year than in aviation accidents. More people die every year in car crashes on the West Side Highway that runs along the Hudson River than in aviation crashes on the Hudson River.
CLOSE THE WEST SIDE HIGHWAY!!!!!!!
CLOSE THE WEST SIDE HIGHWAY!!!!!!!
Prof, the traffic nightmare would take days to sort out!
