When I was growing up, my family's house was right along the glide path to the Grand Rapids, MI airport. Damn those things were loud. When they were taking off it stopped all conversation. They were even loud when they were landing. Fortunately, we were to the east of the airport so they rarely took off to the east.

That one is obviously pre Stage 3 quieting...LOL Loved to fly on them because they were so fast! VC was .88 Mach! Made it coast to coast under 4 hours a few times!

In 1964, Eastern Airlines introduced the “Whisperjet” to its fleet…because the B727-25 was so much quieter inside.

Working at ZHU, I would sequence traffic coming up from South and Central America into the Acton arrival to DFW. American would run their 72's at .80, Brazillia at .81, and Mexicana would nearly always be at .86. We'd refer to them as "Andele Air".
