The Army's transcontinental motor convoy set out from Washington, D.C., en route to Oakland, CA. There were a number of observers from other parts of the army, including LTCOL Eisenhower.

Ike wrote about it in a somewhat breezy book At Ease: Stories I tell to Friends.

A lot has been written that the Autobahn was Ike's inspiration for the Interstate Highway System. That may be true, in part, but I believe that the germ of Ike's push came from his trip with the 1919 convoy.

The trip made Eisenhower understand what the Autobahn was when he saw it.

Lessened learned in 1919 about light vs heavy trucks were well used in 1944-45.
