I predict that this change will last about as long as the abolition of the crackerjack uniform or the adoption of aquaflage.
Traditions matter. Those who got upset that the term "man" was in the names of ratings titles should probably have opted to gotten a job at some place a little better suited for their sensibilities.
Secretary of the Navy Mabus ought to be run out of D.C. on a fucking rail, but only after the traditionally-required tarring and feathering. That decision is basically a reprehensible mixture of extreme political correctness and stupidity and should be reversed.
UPDATE: That didn't take long:
Who knew that Hitler was a scope-monkey?

Once again! We share a common ground!
The aquaflage may be a bit silly, but the AF camo I used to work around wasn't much better. If those guys wanted to be camouflaged, they should have been wearing pictures of printers and server racks...;-)
Frikkin ridiculous! So are they now going to use NECs? I can just see that... PO 8671, can you do X, please?
Lucky if they could find the necessary tar, let alone the feathers...thou the Goat Locker would be a good place to start looking.
Better alignment with civilian occupations?
I'm not sure that we can align combat and ship related jobs that well with civilian occupations.
Everyone quoted in the article has apparently spent so much time ashore, they think everyone else works in an office, too.
But their doubletalk weasel worded vague future goals would fit well in any corporate prospectus.
3383, maybe the near-retirement desk-jockeys who drove this are looking for the ability to more effectively bullshit on their resumes.
Until this moment, it had never occurred to me that "boatswain" was a gendered title.
As was said elsewhere, the 1MC announcement of "Petty Officer Smith, Quarterdeck" on an aircraft carrier should be vastly entertaining.
So what will replace my old helium atom between the crow and chevrons? Yet another fouled anchor?
