To my mind, a bad idea.
There are thousands of schools. Roughly a hundred thousand public schools, with another 33,000 private schools.
There are probably about 600,000 or so cops, not counting Federal badges and university cops. Taking a sixth of the force out of action and turning them into hallway monitors will be a significant whack at manning.
Not to mention that there will be 100,000 cops looking to prevent the three or so spree shootings in any given year. Dollars to donuts that those cops will get involved in other disciplinary issues. So kids who might have been chastised by a little extra work or some in-school detention will now get the cuffs slapped on them and introduced to the juvenile detention system.
Not a good idea.
The spree shooters are looking for soft targets, remember.
Can anyone say "school buses", boys and girls?

I did some very conservative math - - figure $6 Billion a year if you hire new. I'm probably on the low side, eh ?
Don't even go there with the "bus-guard" thing !!!
Funny thing is Clinton proposed this VERY idea, and none of y'all seemed to have a problem with it then...
Once we get past oh my, WE gotta do something...
The questions remain, what wasn't done? What can be done?
Every solution to date I've heard were reflex or biased on the blind faith
based on the fear of guns. I'd add a healthy does of misinformation and
headline mongering.
Now the real work begins. Do gun free zones work? Are armed people a solution and that includes personal concealed carry, professional or police?
Is there any training for administrators, teachers and students that can help?
The media needs to learn responsibly. Thy have in every case run in with misinformation and personal or network bias. Damn for once report only the facts that are known, stop speculating as news and keep that as opinion only.
The last thing that helps is just throwing money at the problem, look at the TSA for an example of waste. That and the schools are as is under funded for their prime purpose.
Eck!
