Can We Have Holidays That Have Not Become Commercial Extravaganzas?

Or, in other words, don't those fuckers in the Walton family have enough money already that they need to drag people in on the middle of the day to get ready for the slavering hordes of consumers?

I think this needs to be controlled by appropriate legislation. It would be unlawful for a retail establishment to be open from 10 PM Thanksgiving Eve until 6 AM on the day after Thanksgiving. The only exceptions would be for restaurants, for retailers whose retail sales volume is at least fifty percent from the sale of motor fuels.

Everybody else, stay the frak closed, you greedy-ass motherfuckers. Let people have a traditional Thanksgiving the way the Pilgrims did: Eating lots of turkey with all of the trimmings and then falling asleep in front of the TV while watching the Detroit Lions get their asses kicked.

Here would come the "commie" comments, if you suffered wingnut trolls to live.

What is the point of having a "holiday" if people have to work on it? I can tell you that the retail workers that I have talked to are not too happy about having to cut their Thanksgiving short to go work at the feet of Mammon.

Besides, back in the day, those good social conservatives were fine with the Sunday blue laws.

Liming in the Volksrepublik nanny state apparently that is still one blue law
in effect so its not before 12PM Thursday for us.

Now if they would add no Thanksgiving before Halloween and no Christmass before
Thanksgiving Maybe that would be a great law. ;)

Seriously.

A number of stores around here (grocery and other) are scheduled to be open Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. Limited hours. This time.

I'm beginning to miss the blue laws. The law of "There's money to be made" is completely unyielding.

K-Mart here is advertising "Doorbusters" at 0600 THANKSGIVING morning. Yeah, I am sick of it. And I don't even celebrate this holiday....

When I lived in England during the 80s, stores in town closed at 6pm (and smaller towns and villages even had an "early closing day" during the week. Everyone was closed on Sunday and "bank holidays." Only thing open on Sundays were restaurants, petrol stations and the DIY (garden centers).
At Christmas stores in the larger cities (including London) had only two nights open late ('til 8pm) in the month of December.
Frankly, I miss it.
Make "Black Friday" your no shopping day.
