Here are two first-hand comments as to why what he did was important for so many people.
Andrew Sullivan is looking at the usual suspects who have promoted the level of hate that encourages easily-programmable Wingnuts to murder people. First up, of course, is Bill O'Reilly, the leading agent provocateur of Wingnut terrorism, which should be no surprise to anyone.
Update: Karen Zipdrive on why she is sitting this one out. I don't fully subscribe to her views, but I understand where she is coming from. It is very hard to give a damn about the rights of people who both don't appreciate their oven freedoms and who don't give a frak about yours.

I have a post that looks at this from an entirely different angle.
His murder was just a sliver of the rampant homophobia we non-breeders tolerate every day of the week.
To be sure it was outrageous, but where's the outrage for denying millions of tax paying Americans basic civil liberties, like the ability to get married?
