Why Biden May Be Shutting Up on Gun Control

The number of new guns purchased in 2020 likely passed the total for 2019 sometime this month. August volume won’t be available for at least another week, although after Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting (SAAF) Chief Economist Jurgen Brauer said in a press release earlier this month—after analyzing July’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) volume—“Our estimates suggest that the market for the first seven months of 2020 now has nearly matched that of the entire year of 2019.”

The FBI processed 3,639,224 NICS checks in July, the third highest on record. Only June and March of this year have experienced a heavier monthly volume in the entire history of the system. After subtracting administrative use, last month’s figure represents roughly 2 million firearm purchases.

Self-defense continues to be the top priority. Records checks related to the purchase of a handgun totaled 1,120,768. Only half of that number were associated with long guns—shotguns and rifles.

Every month in 2020 has experienced an increase in firearm sales when compared to the same periods in 2019, Retailer surveys indicate 40 percent of this year’s purchases were made by first-time buyers, another key factor contributing to the current strain on the ammunition supply chain.
Think about that for a second: Two million guns bought in July. If the surveys of retailers is close to accurate, that's 800,000 new gun owners in one month.

Run that out for this year, to date and that's millions of new gun owners out there. That's a lot of votes to leave on the table because one doesn't happen to like the NRA.

I would vote for Biden. Why? despite antigun rhetoric of the Dems,
its a case of what they might actually do vs what they mutter about.
Then we have courts and all that if they go full nutty. Beside
there are bigger rotting fish to spend time on.

The Drumpf case may I need that firearm as he is inviting anarchy
and all the likely bad scenarios that it may bring. Possibility
to my doorstep. Who says hes pro anything, 2x10^5 lies later.

Its an easy choice, no drumpf.

Yeah, a shotgun will be a lot of use if they decide to drone your ass.

Eck! said...

Actually from hunting and trap I'm good with shotgun... least out to
50 yards maybe more if needed.
For the longer shots, long rifle.

So a drone... Of course if they do that once its going
to be a big deal. Then the drivers have to worry about
directed mortor fire from 3000 or more yards
[one long three right, fire at will].

Reality is that might cause internal actions with those
directing them. Concern but not a worry.

Tell me how rifles and shotguns will fare against APCs full of armed men and women.

DA, it's civil unrest people are worried about, not rebellion. It's Trump-inspired disorder that people fear.

Trump is following an old playbook: Incite civil unrest, encourage street-fighting, then claim that "only I can put a stop to the unrest." That crap worked elsewhere in the '20s and '30s.

If Biden would come to his senses on gun control, he might at least a bit more palatable......but I’m not holding my breath.

Show us on the Constitution where Biden threatens your 2nd Amendment rights.

CenterPuke88 said...

While I agree that not poking the bear is a smart plan, I suspect you are overestimating the number of new gun owners. The vast majority of those gun sales are likely to existing gun owners, but we really have no way of knowing.

Constitutional Insurgent said...

You can start with the misnomered “assault weapons” ban........but I’ll simplify it for you under “Shall not be infringed”.

Trump, the right, and the center have been against the riots from Day 1.

The left has been tacitly and overtly in favor of the riots until they saw the polling several days ago.

Dark Avenger said...

Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential nominee, responded on Monday to recent incidents of violence in which at least three people have died during clashes between the president's supporters and anti-racism protesters:

"Rioting is not protesting. Looting is not protesting. Setting fires is not protesting. None of this is protesting. It's lawlessness, plain and simple."
He continued:

"Ask yourself: Do I look like a radical socialist with a soft spot for rioters? Really? I want a safe America, safe from COVID, safe from crime and looting, safe from racially motivated violence, safe from bad cops."
Biden said Trump looks at instances of violence as his "political lifeline."

"He keeps telling you if only he was president, it wouldn't happen. If he was president, you'd feel safe. Well, he is president, whether he knows it or not. And it is happening. It's getting worse, and you know why? Because Donald Trump adds fuel to every fire."

The following is from June 2

Here are the remarks as prepared for delivery:
"I can't breathe." "I can't breathe."
George Floyd's last words. But they didn't die with him. They're still being heard. They're echoing across this nation.
They speak to a nation where too often just the color of your skin puts your life at risk.
They speak to a nation where more than 100,000 people have lost their lives to a virus -- and 40 million Americans have filed for unemployment -- with a disproportionate number of these deaths and job losses concentrated in black and brown communities.
And they speak to a nation where every day millions of people -- not at the moment of losing their life -- but in the course of living their life -- are saying to themselves, "I can't breathe."
It's a wake-up call for our nation. For all of us.
And I mean all of us. It's not the first time we've heard these words -- they're the same words we heard from Eric Garner when his life was taken six years ago.
But it's time to listen to these words. Understand them. And respond to them -- with real action.
The country is crying out for leadership. Leadership that can unite us. Leadership that can bring us together. Leadership that can recognize the pain and deep grief of communities that have had a knee on their neck for too long.
But there is no place for violence.
No place for looting or destroying property or burning churches, or destroying businesses — many of them built by people of color who for the first time were beginning to realize their dreams and build wealth for their families.
Nor is it acceptable for our police — sworn to protect and serve all people — to escalate tensions or resort to excessive violence.
We need to distinguish between legitimate peaceful protest — and opportunistic violent destruction.

The closest thing to civil unrest I have lived through, if you don't count gang activity, was when I was living close to 98th and Edes in East Oakland during the Rodney King riots.
Didn't have a car, had to walk right through the damn thing to get my dinner, and the one time I got jacked up I would have been killed had I been carrying.
Your best defense in civil unrest is your brain, and no amount of armament will save you if your brain isn't functioning.

Status Quo Joe is as middle of the road as white lines and armadillos, he's no gun-grabber. Suggestions otherwise are hysterical bullshit from the same rubes that twisted everyones' panties in a knot over Clinton's e-mails. Like his religion, I can think of lots of reasons not to vote for him - and I won't be, I'm voting against trump - this isn't one of them.

Go ahead, point your pop-pistols at the US Army.

There was a time when it was possible to endorse "responsible" gun ownership. That time (along with many other times) is past. I will not assert that I regret that fact more than you do, or even for substantially different reasons; but there is no point at all in pretending that it is not so.

Biden's gun safety policy statement is here: https://joebiden.com/gunsafety/

Constitutional Insurgent said...

There’s no gun “safety” there, none at all. There is however, gun control proposals. Or don’t words matter any more

CI, double-ought, the eight years of the Obama/Biden administration were by and far the gun industry's best years ever. There is no reason to think the Biden administration will be any different. You're blowin' sunshine, but it's missing the tailpipe.

Constitutional Insurgent said...

You’re correct in the first part, but that doesn’t negate the stated goals of not only Biden/Harris, but also the panoply of gun controllers present and pending in both houses of Congress. Constitutional Rights are never safe from those who would infringe upon them....so I’ll not close my eyes and pretend all is well.

Tod Germanica said...

Tenbears, correct, no dems ever grabbed any guns but that lie, 'they're coming for your guns!' Works every single time for weakminded GOP trumpite zombies and, predictable as the sun rising, gun sales shoot up and gun makers, gun sellers, and pawnshops guys get hap, hap happy again. And still more guns get shoved in a closet, never to be used (a good thing). Works every time. Even though most in the industry are hard reichists I bet most of them hold their noses and vote D just for those sweet sweet green simoleons.

Constitutional Insurgent said...

Every attempted and passed “assault weapons” ban was proffered and enabled by Democrats. Criminalizing the possessions of a previously lawful class of firearms......is the very definition of “gun grabbing”. It happened....own it.

Ten Bears said...

You're grasping at straws and you know it. Don't mistake me, I've been in the both hands school of thought all of my life, but the fact of the matter is there are too damned many guns out there in the hands of too damned many stupid people and all your fake hysteria is just that, fake. Obama didn't take your precious plastic pee-pees, Biden isn't going to take them either.

I don't get it CI, you're a smart guy, what are you doing flogging that dead horse?

Oh, and, I don't need an "assault" rifle, I can shoot.

Dark Avenger, two quotes from Biden that omit actions to take do not make me a liar, you gaslighting piece of shit. And I said "The left".

The leaders of the riot-suffering cities have been allowing the riots. Minneapolis had the police pull back; the result was arson and looting. Seattle allowed non-elected dirtbags to take over some city blocks; murders were the impetus to clear them out. Portland is not even charging most of those who commit criminal acts, which removes that disincentive.

Don Lemon to Chris Cuomo 35 Aug 2020: "The rioting has to stop. Chris, as you know and I know it's showing up in the polling."

Constitutional Insurgent said...

You lost credibility at “plastic pee-pees”. Rational minds don’t need to resort to that......but I guess I can understand since you really can’t refute my point.

Gee, two reporters from CNN. That is really convincing.

Funny how you say Biden’s statements are gaslighting, but you can’t find any traces of the rioting on the polls after almost two weeks.

Trump's 'law and order' messaging isn't sticking with voters as new polls show they trust Biden more on public safety

Former Vice President Joe Biden's visit on Thursday afternoon to Kenosha was a markedly different scene from President Donald Trump's trip to the Wisconsin city two days earlier.

While visiting the city, Biden spoke on the phone with Jacob Blake, a Black man who was shot seven times in the back by a police officer last month, triggering protests in Kenosha and across the country. The former vice president also met with Blake's family members and discussed systemic racism with community leaders.

"We've reached an inflection point in American history," the Democratic presidential candidate said on Thursday. "I honest to God believe we have an enormous opportunity now that the screen, the curtain has been pulled back on just what's going on in the country, to do a lot of really positive things."

Trump, on the other hand, did not speak to Blake nor meet his family, claiming they wanted to involve lawyers, which he found inappropriate. The president instead talked to law enforcement officials and business owners, surveyed the damage done during protests, and hammered the state's Democratic leaders, who had asked him to not show up.
During his visit, Trump continued to cast himself as the patron of "law and order," repeating the messaging around which he's built his 2020 reelection effort. Last week's Republican National Convention largely focused on similar themes.

During his visit, Trump continued to cast himself as the patron of "law and order," repeating the messaging around which he's built his 2020 reelection effort. Last week's Republican National Convention largely focused on similar themes.

"The most dangerous aspect of the Biden platform is the attack on public safety," Trump said during convention. "No one will be safe in Biden's America."

Yet, several new polls released this week suggest the president's hardline strategy hasn't been swaying voters. Instead, 47 percent of registered voters said they trust Biden to handle public safety, opposed to 39 percent who have more faith in Trump, according to a Morning Consult survey.

Similarly, 42 percent of likely voters said they would feel more safe with Biden as president, versus 35 percent who said the same for Trump, a Quinnipiac University poll showed.
