The United States Department of Agriculture on Tuesday said that, over the weekend, it accidentally fired "several" agency employees who are working on the federal government's response to the H5N1 avian flu outbreak.
In a statement, the agency said it is trying to quickly reverse the firings.
"Although several positions supporting [avian flu] were notified of their terminations over the weekend, we are working to swiftly rectify the situation and rescind those letters," a USDA spokesperson said in a statement. "USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service frontline positions are considered public safety positions, and we are continuing to hire the workforce necessary to ensure the safety and adequate supply of food to fulfill our statutory mission."
Idiots. I expect that a lot of the firings will be reversed because the DOGEholes are claiming performance issues when a shitload of the people being fired have excellent performance reviews.
Beyond that, I would not be surprised if the survivng Federal workers end up being radicalized against everything that the Musk Administration seeks to do and implements creative and undetectable sabotage moves. Nobody knows better how to gum up the works without leaving fingerprints like an experienced bureaucrat. For it is really stupid to make enemies out of the people who work for you.

closing paragraph: hint hint hint
I was once fired and then rehired the same day. I filed a workers comp suit against a car owner whos car ran me over in the shop, and the suit named my job so the boss thought I was suing him. My lawyer tried to tell him not to do that, his lawyer told him not to do that or I could own the shop, and he finally listened. I didn't lose any money that day, but I lost all respect for that job. I was until I left, a hostile employee. I can't imagine these folks will take it much better.
