For Ten Years, Now-- Mass Shooting Ed.

Ten years ago, I proposed that everyone stop referring to the perpetrators of mass shootings by their names. I've reiterated that several times.

These assholes want to be famous. Whether they understand the difference between being famous and being infamous is probably not worth debating. Let's strip them of that.

I don't think that this would be much of a restriction on the right of a free press. They can and do cover sexual assaults without naming the victims. Why would it be so difficult for them to not name the perpetrators?

My bet would be that the reporters would recoil in horror and start yelling about: "How dare you suggest that we give up any of our First Amendment rights??!" Which does not pass the "so, what" test. They want me to give up some of my rights? Let's see how serious they are and see if they'll give up some of theirs.

  1. Two snaps up around the world, Comrade! There are studies now that show this factor does have an influence on disturbed, male youth researching this kind of crime (and venerating these asswipes).

  2. I've been taking your lead and calling them the asswipe of (place name) for years at this point.
The broadcast media will definitely howl about lost revenue from not sensationalizing these creeps, but god damn it, what happened to the deal we made with them to get news as a public interest good in exchange for them using the public airwaves to make money?
Ever since broadcast news were required to make their own profits for the media companies that own them, the quality of the news delivered deteriorated to the point of barely being useful at all unless you know how to translate it.
Perhaps a new deal needs to be negotiated with them, but I am less than optimistic about that getting done while campaign finance is in its current state.

  3. I think they should publish the crime scene photos of the victims, then we can all appreciate the devastation these weapons produce.

  5. The world is full of asswipes, this is one of the few places where they have unfettered access to assault-type weapons.
